Updated guide to Building Regulations Part L 1a – Insulation solutions towards Zero Carbon
The Government has finally outlined its definition of zero carbon homes that will apply to all properties built from 2016. Housing Minister Grant Shapps has confirmed the new fabric efficiency standards, developed by the Zero Carbon Hub, that will be written into future Building Regulation changes from 2013 – so we now have clarity in what we need to achieve to reach Zero Carbon under Part L.
The 2010 revision is just the next step on that road towards Zero Carbon. Whilst the full impact of the recent changes are yet to be seen on the ground, many architects, designers and energy assessors have been meeting level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes. What is becoming apparent, especially among the house builders, is that the fabric first approach to compliance is the most practical way of achieving the new low energy standards.
Xtratherm have produced a number of brochures that will be of use to you in formulating your own strategy to meeting these new standards. The guidance to Part L1a has been revised to show how our specifications will meet Part L 2010 and we have enhanced the U-value targets towards the new defined Fabric Energy Efficiency Standard for Zero Carbon.
Why are we stretching the performance targets within the guide?, because designers, developers and homeowners now realize the financial benefits in enhancing the fabric performance. And because they are now seen as achievable in a practical, affordable way using Xtratherm products such as CavityTherm that can meet Zero Carbon U-value standards within the traditional build that people desire and are buildable using traditional skills.
The CavityTherm offering has been extended to include a new 125mm and 150mm board that will achieve U-values down to 0.12W/m2K in a reasonable wall width.
